WHAT ABOUT
MECHANICAL DEVICES?
Mechanical IV securement
devices - while some are very effective, most if not all
are complicated technologies that require training to
use, and a skill set that needs to be acquired before
one is considered competent. Worst yet, they all require
a significant amount of time to apply (more than 2
minutes for most), and similar to tape, cannot be moved
once it is applied. Some use an adhesive to apply to the
skin, which often requires a solvent to remove. Often,
these devices also require the initial use of tape to
secure the catheter, then an additional sterile dressing
to cover the site.
